For most people, toothaches are probably a bad nightmare. This is no wonder, because toothaches are often particularly intense. You can hardly ignore it. As soon as either the hard tooth substance is damaged or the tooth roots are exposed, the tooth nerve itself is irritated. Caries, gum problems, and exposed tooth roots can be easily voided by a good oral hygiene. An ideal dentist or oral hygienist aims to remove bacterial plaque thoroughly.

1. Less, but thoroughly is more than often, but superficial. Instead of scrubbing your front teeth, 3 times per day you should at least once a day remove as much plaque as possible. As cavities and periodontitis mostly start from the interdental spaces, the toothbrush will not provide a sufficient cleaning. You could use dental floss or other interdental cleaning devices. Although we’ve all learned to brush our teeth a long time ago, only very few adults are applying a sufficient cleaning technique. Don’t be shy: ask for instructions at your dental office

2. Your dentist is your partner – not the enemy. Regular dental check-ups are essential in order to detect cavities, inflammation, cracked teeth or defective fillings in time

3. If your teeth are sensitive, it is advisable to avoid cold, hot, sweet or sour food. In patients with sensitive teeth tooth roots are exposed. The tooth roots are not covered with enamel. Instead, the tooth nerve is almost open via small capillaries.

4. It is advisable to reduce the frequency of your sugar consumption. The bacteria in the plaque are transforming the sugar into acids that cause tooth decay. When you constantly feed these bacteria the teeth are permanently under “acid attack”. After eating the sugar, the saliva has the capability to neutralize the sugar acids and the tooth can be re-mineralized. If you feel like having a sweet or you would like to drink a sugared drink it is better to eat and drink fast instead of permanently nipping from it over hours.

5. Bruxism is what dentists call nocturnal tooth grinding. Sufferers do not recognize that they are literally grinding down their chewing surfaces. It can also lead to little cracks. Both, the eroded surfaces and the cracks can be painful. The bruxism damages can easily be prevented by wearing a taylor-made biting tray during the night.
