Whether young girls or adult women: women can always suffer from pain that can have a negative impact on their daily lives. Sometimes it can even be necessary to miss school or take a day off work, until the discomfort subsides.

Menstrual pain is caused by contractions of the uterus. The contractions help in the deposition shedding of the uterine lining so that it can be regenerated. In order to initiate the contractions, the body releases chemical compounds, so-called prostaglandins, which are also responsible for the transmission of the pain signals.

Warmth acts by soothing and resolves contractions of the uterus. You could try and use a home remedy that really helps - a hot bath, a warm pillow or a heating pad.

Further measures to treat menstrual pain:

  • Massages help to relax your muscles
  • Sports - you will not notice it immediately, but an active lifestyle is a good way to reduce pain. Sport leads not only to a better blood circulation, but also relaxes the muscles. Sports as light swimming, moderate running or cycling support your body to relax
  • Painkillers as Brufen relieve menstrual pain. As the body releases prostaglandins to initiate the contractions of the uterus, drugs containing ibuprofen are effective against menstrual pain. The effect of ibuprofen is due to an inhibition of prostaglandins. If no prostaglandins are produced, pain, fever and inflammation disappear5.
  • Supplementary therapies – meditations or herbal teas can also help in some cases.

When should you consult an expert with menstrual pain?
Seek medical attention if your pain is more severe than usual, or if it is irregular or delayed.

How to treat menstrual pain

Brufen acts directly at the source of pain5,8,14,15:
Brufen belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Thus, painkillers or antiphlogistics (inflammatory inhibitors) are described which treat the symptoms of inflammatory processes, such as pain and swelling, but are not derived from cortisone.

The effect of Brufen is due to an inhibition of prostaglandins16,17. They can cause pain, fever and inflammation. If no prostaglandins are produced, pain, fever and inflammation disappear. While drugs such as paracetamol reduce the transmission of pain to the brain, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen act directly and are targeted towards the affected tissue. The actual causes of pain such as inflammatory processes are combated on the spot18. In other words: Brufen with its active ingredient ibuprofen works right at the source of pain. It also fights the inflammation in the inflamed tissue.

Ibuprofen is a so-called "acidic" painkiller (based on its pH value), because of its acidic nature, it penetrates well into the inflamed tissue12.

Brufen acts fast:
When you or maybe your child is in pain, you may be seeking fast and effective relief. Brufen combats pain quickly. The active substance is rapidly absorbed into the blood and the symptoms such as toothache or headache improve noticeably after 15 minutes6,11.

Brufen acts for up to 8 hours:
Pain can be stressful and can thus affect everyday life. It is generally expected that a pain killer can help relieve pain, at least for a day. Brufen with the active ingredient Ibuprofen can reduce symptoms and up to 8 hours15,23,24.
